Cycle Parking / provision for cycles
Providing Cycle Parking
In a TfL survey, 53% stated the availability of designated cycle parking was poor – so providing somewhere safe, secure and accessible for staff to leave their bikes at work is a great step in becoming a cycle-friendly employer.
Well designed cycle parking sends a message to all staff and customers that cycling is actively encouraged within the organisation – by installing it employers will find staff are more likely to make that first cycle journey
How much parking will I need for my business?
All businesses are different, but one rule of thumb is to follow the requirements of BREEAM 2011, which recommends providing 2 bicycle parking spaces for every 10 members of staff.
How much will it cost?
Bicycle parking doesn’t have to be expensive. One Sheffield stand provides space to park two bicycles and can work out as little as £28 + VAT per stand.
Installation costs would need to be added to this – these vary depending on the number and type of stands being installed, and the fixings being used e.g. bolt down or concrete in fixings. As a rough guide installing a Sheffield stand costs around £50 per stand.

Where should I put cycle parking?
Ideally in a location close to building entry points, in a position that is safe and dry.
How much space will be needed?
You need to consider the space you have available.
One car space can typically be converted into space to park 8 bicycles.
If space is tight, compact solutions could be an option, for example Two Tier Racks or Wall Docks. If the storage area available is outside, consider installing a bike shelter.
Cycle parking providers can advise on the best options available for your organisation.
What sort of stands should I go for?
There are many options to consider – see the pdf to the right for examples of the stands available. In order to ensure maximum bicycle security, all stands should be designed so both wheels and the frame can be locked to the stand.
